Alarmel Valli is aleading Indian dancer and choreographer, noted for her ability to turn a traditional grammar into a subtle, deeply internalized, personal dance poetry. Having trained in Bharatanatyam from the age of six, under great masters Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai and his son Sri Subbaraya Pillai, she has evolved a distinctive style that has been described as 'uncompromisingly classical, but, at the same time, an undeniable language of self-expression...both a stylised idiom and an idiolect, blurring the boundaries between tradition and the individual talent, inheritance and invention.' In a career spanning over four decades, she has created a significant body of work that explores the infinite spaces within the Indian classical tradition.
